Time It Right

Eat Halloween sweets (and other sugary foods) with meals or shortly after mealtime. Saliva production increases during meals. This helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and rinse away food particles.

Stay Away from Sweet Snacks

Snacking can increase your risk of cavities, and it’s double the trouble if you keep grabbing sugary treats from the candy bowl. Snacking on candy throughout the day is not ideal for your dental health or diet,.

Choose Sweets Carefully

Make sure your sweets are sugar free.

Avoid hard sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. Aside from how often you snack, the length of time sugary food is in your mouth plays a role in tooth decay. Unless it is a sugar-free product, candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay.

Avoid Sticky Situations

Sticky sweets cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like toffee and gummy bears, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.

Have a Plan

It’s tempting to keep that candy around, but your teeth will thank you if you limit your stash. ‘Have your family pick their favourites and donate the rest.’

Drink More Water

Drink water, avoid a dry mouth this  can help prevent tooth decay. If you choose bottled water, look for kinds that are sugar free. Even sugar free ‘diet’ fizzy drinks may be acidic which cause harm to your teeth

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Your body is like a complex machine.The foods you choose as fuel and how often you “fill up” affect your general health and that of your teeth and gums.

Stay Away from Sugary Beverages

This includes fizzy drinks, sports drinks and flavoured water.When teeth come in frequent contact with beverages that contain sugar, the risk of tooth decay is increased.

Chew sugar free chewing gum 

Chewing sugar free gum for 20 minutes after meals helps reduce tooth decay, because increased saliva flow helps wash out food and neutralise the acid produced by bacteria.

Brush Twice a Day

Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride containing toothpaste. Change your tooth brush 8- 10 weeks , or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

Clean Between Your Teeth

Floss your teeth once a day. Decay-causing bacteria get between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

Who brushes your children’s teeth

Would you let your child cross the road on his or her own ?

Do you allow your child to brush his or her teeth ?

How old do will you your child be when you allow  your son or daughter  to cross the road on their own ?

One of the main causes of tooth decay in children is poor oral hygiene, more specifically inefficient brushing of teeth. What happens when we let our children do the brushing on their own?

During consultation, parents  often say “My child knows how to do it”, “My child does not want me to brush his/her teeth” or “I want my child to be independent.”Many parents allow their children to brush their teeth by themselves. What happens then? The child does a very poor job of cleaning his/her teeth, and ultimately, the end result is dental problems.

Every child is different but in general parents should brush their child’s teeth until they are about 8 to 10 years old . Depending on the child (parental judgement ! ), this about the same age as you might allow them to cross the road on their own.Remember that it is very important that parents continue to supervise their children’s brushing until the age 10 to 12. This is to make sure that they’re doing it thoroughly. Brushing should be done for two minutes minimum twice a day.

Brushing is a skill. Like many skills, it take years to learn it and be good at it. Young children usually do not have the manual dexterity to brush or floss properly. If your child wants to do it by himself, let him/her ! It’s a great way to practice, but ALWAYS make sure that you brush their teeth before or after they have done it for themselves. For older children aged 10 to 12 years, make sure that you supervise them. Be there when your child brushes his/her  teeth and make sure that your child is doing it well. Reinforce whenever necessary.

Mouthwash dilema

Scientists report that overweight people who use a mouthwash are 50% more likely to develop diabetes.

Research at Harvard tested people who used a mouthwash twice a day were likely to develop diabetes or a prediabetic condition, irrespective of their gender,weight and diet compared to those who used it less often.

Kamudi Joshipura the author of the study found that the powerful antibacterial mouthwashes destroy all bacteria including those which produce nitric oxide which helps the body regulate insulin levels.

Diabetes charities Are awaiting further studies before comment. The British Dental Association does not list a mouthwash as an essential for proper health care.

Mouth wash is often marketed the route to good oral hygine.

There is no substitute for good tooth brushing ( with a fluoride containing toothpaste) and flossing technique.

Hidden tooth infections increase heart disease risk by almost three times

Undetected tooth infections could increase the risk of heart disease by almost three times, according to new research.

The study, published in the Journal of Dental Research1, has found that people with untreated tooth infections are 2.7 times more likely to have cardiovascular problems, such as coronary artery disease, than patients who have had treatment of dental infections.

With cardiovascular diseases being a contributor in an estimated 30 per cent of all deaths globally, leading health charity, the Oral Health Foundation, wants to encourage more regular dental visits, especially if we are experiencing toothache, sensitivity or bleeding gums.

Speaking on the issue Dr Nigel Carter OBE, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, said: “This research is very worrying as tooth infections are initially caused by tooth decay which is triggered by poor oral hygiene routines and a diet high in sugar.

“The major signs of root infection (usually known as a dental abscess) include pain, often when biting down on the tooth, and sometimes swelling. The tooth may also become discoloured. But sometimes infection does not immediately present with these symptoms and can go undetected for some time.

“Thankfully, maintaining good basic oral health and cutting your risk is very easy. By brushing our teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste; cut down on the amount of sugary foods and drinks and how often we have them and visiting our dentist regularly, as often as they recommend, we can help prevent disease, not only in the mouth but the whole body too.”

As well as looking after your oral health preventing gum disease can be boosted by a healthy diet, weight control, exercise and not smoking.

“Infections occur when decay reaches the centre of the tooth, the dental pulp, when the tooth dies a reservoir of bacteria spreads beyond the end of the root and can enter the bloodstream. Treatment for this would usually be a root canal treatment to remove all of the infected tissue and prevent bacteria spreading,” Dr Carter added.

“These new findings add to the existing links between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. It has previously been established that people with gum disease almost twice as likely to develop heart disease than people without it, this makes the need for good oral care even more important.

“Over recent years’ problems in the mouth have also been linked to other serious conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and problems with pregnancy, so it is vital that we see our oral health as a priority.”

The Oral Health Foundation welcomes more research into this matter as it may be a way to prevent many instances of cardiovascular disease around the world and ultimately save lives.

Though losing weight or being more organized are good resolutions, there is one resolution that is oftentimes overlooked, and that is the resolution to have a healthier smile. Most people are advised visit the dentist every six months. Fresh breath

Are you concerned that friends or co-workers stand further away than necessary to talk to you? Do you receive daily offers of gum and mints? If the answer is yes to these questions … you may have bad breath, also called halitosis.

How is it possible for you to have bad breath and not know it? Your body uses a process called acclimation to filter out its own scents so you can use your nose to detect outside smells. This means your nose is used to whatever odor is emitting from your mouth. Even if you cup your hand and breathe into it, you probably won’t detect foul aromas. So, how can you tell if you have halitosis?

The easiest test for determining if your breath is bad is to ask someone. It will take courage on their part but friends or family members will probably be more than happy to render an honest opinion.

Why do I have bad breath?

The most common reason people have bad breath is decaying food particles and bacterial growth in the mouth, especially on the tongue. If you have poor oral hygiene habits, the accumulation of food and bacteria will make create a mouth odour.

There are other reasons for bad breath.-reasons to be concerned.

 Gum disease and cavities can produce halitosis, and so can systemic illnesses such as diabetes, acid reflux and sinus infections. In fact, if you have chronic bad breath that doesn’t respond to any of your freshening and cleansing attempts—you may have a larger health concern, and should make an appointment with us at Harrow Dental Centre

How do I avoid bad breath?

Keeping a daily oral hygiene routine can go a long way to prevent halitosis. Brushing and rinsing in the mornings and evenings, and flossing at least once a day, can remove the food and bacteria that are the main causes for bad breath. And you can brush after meals, too, to ensure any strong-smelling foods you’ve eaten are eradicated from your teeth and gums. Other measures you can take to prevent halitosis are:

Drink plenty of water. Water loosens and rinses away food particles and also encourages saliva production.

Chew gum that’s either sugar-free or sweetened with Xylitol. Chewing also encourages saliva production, and minty flavors help freshen breath.

Rinse with an antibacterial. At the Harrow Dental Centre we may have suggestions for the best over-the-counter mouthwashes or also give you a specific oral rinse ,for example .Retardex or peroxyl

Use a tongue scraper. These devices are designed to remove the bacteria and food debris that cling to your tongue’s surface.

Invest in an electric toothbrush. Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes make it easier to remove plaque. Since most of them are designed to turn off after a specified time, people tend to brush for the specified 2 minute period. We recommend the Phillips Sonicare or Braun /Oral B  range of tooth brushes. All tooth pastes will help freshen your breath.

Arrange regular dental examinations. Attending your regular exams with your dentist helps to ensure that your health issues will be addressed at their earliest appearance. At the Harrow Dental Centre we will complete an examination of the soft tissue of you mouth , gums and teeth. If you have good oral hygiene and healthy soft tissues and gums and still have a mouth odour problem we will refer you your family doctor for a medical examination,
